How powerful are the Terminators in the new edition of Warhammer 40,000?
Terminators have been crushing alien skulls for nearly 35 years. The new edition has given them a serious boost, and now that the whole squad is assembled, it's time to find out how they fare on the battlefield.
In case you missed it, unit datasheets have undergone a major makeover. All armies will receive a bundle of datasheets* to reorganize their units when the new edition launches, and it's time to take a look at another one of those datasheets: the Terminator Squad.
Yes. There's a lot to unpack.
Features of Terminators in V10
One of the main goals of the new edition of Warhammer 40,000 is to make the toughest units even tougher and allow them to endure punishment worthy of their reputation. Terminators, for example, retain their iconic 2+ save but benefit from an increased Toughness of 5 and a 4+ Invulnerability save from the start, increasing their resistance to low-powered massed weapons and armor-piercing cannons.
Their Leadership score of 6+ is also excellent in the new edition - on par with most Characters - although with an Objective Control score of only 1, they will need the help of the Intercessors to hold the fort.
These vaunted veterans of the 1st Company are tough guys and, as we shall see, they will inflict injuries to match.
Space Marine Terminator Weapons in V10
Bolters and power fists go together like cheese and wine. The former has a new rapid fire ability that allows for additional shots at mid-range. So, with a rapid fire of 2 on top of the weapon's base attack value of 2, it can still fire four shots within a 12" radius.
Power Fists are a bit spicier. They're now less bulky and hit on a 3+, while Chain Fists destroy armor thanks to the new 3+ Anti-Vehicle ability.
Anti abilities—which cover many keywords like Infantry, Monster, and Vehicle—produce a Critical Wound** on any wound roll that meets or exceeds the specified score, regardless of the target's Toughness. This allows for specialized weapons that excel at their intended purpose but aren't as lethal against other target types.
Several other Terminator weapons have their own abilities, such as the assault cannon's devastating wounds, which we'll cover later.
Terminator Abilities in WH40k V10
Nearly every skill card in the game has its own special ability, many of which were stratagems. Teleport Homer uses the new basic stratagem Rapid Ingress to Deep Strike*** during your opponent's turn.
The Fury of the First, meanwhile, makes Terminators particularly effective at destroying the target of the Oath of Now, the Space Marines' faction ability. We'll see how that plays out tomorrow, when we get our first look at the faction rules.
