GW Reveals What Will Happen to Codex Books in 10th Edition

Games Workshop has just reiterated what will happen to all current Warhammer 40k codex books when it transitions to 10th Edition.

Live from the Warhammer Community, let's dive into the new details and find out what will happen to our current books in the future.

What will happen to codex books in Warhammer 40k 10th Edition?
Tyranids 10th Edition 7

The Design Studio has taken a long, hard look at the state of the game. The core rules that underpin Warhammer 40,000 are sound, but in their review, they found many opportunities to streamline the system, fix rules that weren't quite right, and make many other "quality of life" changes.

As they have stated on several occasions, the new edition aims to simplify and lighten the rules. With this reveal, they have reiterated this idea.

9th Edition Codex

These sticky complexities have now been ironed out, without losing any of the game's depth. These much-needed simplifications are significant enough that, from a rules perspective at least, all 9th Edition codexes are rendered obsolete.

This doesn't mean they are useless (lol):

They're still packed with the lore and stories that define each faction, and until new codices appear in the new edition, these books will remain the primary repository of the knowledge you need.

Although the phrase "made obsolete" sounds a bit harsh, it does make sense.

The overhaul they're talking about seems to be wholesale, and trying to incorporate or tweak all the current rules is simply not worth it and would be confusing for players anyway.

What about the 9th Edition Maps?

The associated data card packs are also obsolete. One of the main drivers of army streamlining has been to drastically reduce the number of stratagems available to each faction. Gone are the days of shuffling 50 cards to find the right ability— each army now has a shortlist of them, included in its defining double-page spread.

Once the bandage is ripped off, the datacards containing the codex rules will also be unusable.

"You'll still be able to play any army you want when the new edition arrives. We'll be releasing revised, reformatted, and redesigned datasheets for every unit in the game—all free to download at launch and ready to use. You'll also be able to purchase inexpensive packs of these cards at launch."

However, to ease the pain a little, all factions will receive a sort of rules index for free online on day 1!

Wh40k V9 - The Fateful Arches & Boarding Actions, meanwhile, are still relevant.

The core rules for Arks of Omen: Abaddon were specifically written to work with the new edition, and the book will remain available for the foreseeable future. All you need to play this tight, tense Warhammer 40,000 format is this book, the book that contains the rules for your own faction, and a set of terrain.

The last information they gave us was about the Arks of Omen series, and thankfully , these recent books and their rules have been designed to continue working in 10th Edition...

Let us thank the Emperor for that, at least.
